{"id":5356,"date":"2024-03-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=5356"},"modified":"2026-06-27T19:03:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T02:03:30","slug":"engineering-technician-1-bioengineering-only","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/engineering-technician-1-bioengineering-only\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering Technician 1 &#8211; Bioengineering Only"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18521 (NE S WFSE Campuswide &#8211; Bioengineering Only)<br \/>\n22652 (NE H NI WFSE Campuswide &#8211; Bioengineering Only)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following requirements and specifications from engineers or scientists, perform engineering technician work designing, developing, fabricating, modifying, assembling and repairing various mechanical, electro-mechanical, agricultural, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic instruments, apparatus and equipment within an engineering, scientific, or instructional application.<\/p>\n<p>This series is distinguished from the Electronics Technician series by spending a majority of time in the design, development, and fabrication of specialized engineering, scientific, or instructional instruments, apparatus and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>This series is distinguished from the Computer Maintenance Technician series by maintaining and\/or repairing computer or other microprocessor-controlled integrated digital equipment which is integrated or interfaced with specialized engineering, scientific, or instructional instruments, apparatus and equipment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assist in the design and development, and perform skilled and precision work constructing, installing, calibrating, and testing instruments, apparatus, and equipment within a scientific, instructional or engineering application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under general supervision, independently perform basic engineering technician tasks such as: assisting in the design and development of apparatus; performing skilled, precision machine tool work constructing apparatus; modifying existing equipment for specific requirements; assisting investigators set up experiments and acquire data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Assist in the development and design of apparatus as set forth by the engineer or scientist in sketches, oral instructions, blueprints, or CAD programs;<\/p>\n<p>Perform skilled and precision work on the layout, construction and\/or assembly of instruments and equipment such as strain gauge holders, amplifiers, calibrators, notch filters, transducers; generate block diagrams, design circuits and circuit board layout, write software as needed, and select components; build (including enclosure(s)) using electronic, machine and hand tools such as drill presses; soldering guns; gas acetylene, and arc welders; lathes; grinders, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate suitability of commercially-manufactured equipment for use in research requirements;<\/p>\n<p>Modify existing equipment such as analog simulators, electrophoresis apparatus, printers, or digital audio processors to meet specialized requirements;<\/p>\n<p>Install equipment and test for proper operation; adjust and calibrate; troubleshoot and repair equipment malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level, using diagnostic software as needed;<\/p>\n<p>Install, level and tram lathes and other machine tools;<\/p>\n<p>Order and maintain an inventory of commonly used tools and supplies;<\/p>\n<p>Assist investigators, engineers and\/or scientists in the setup of experiments and the acquisition of data;<\/p>\n<p>Instruct laboratory personnel in the assembly, operation, and maintenance of experimental apparatus and instruments;<\/p>\n<p>May direct the work of others;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three years of experience as an electronics technician, instrument maker, or engineering assistant.
