{"id":5146,"date":"2024-03-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=5146"},"modified":"2026-06-27T19:02:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T02:02:26","slug":"machinist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/machinist\/","title":{"rendered":"Machinist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18846 (NE S WFSE Trades)<br \/>\n22838 (NE H NI WFSE Trades)<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEFINITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Operate machine tools to close tolerances in fabricating and repairing parts and components.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Positions allocated to this class are distinguished by the requirement for performing journey-level work by operation of machine tools such as engine lathes, knee mills, shapers, grinders, radial drills, etc., working from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and verbal instructions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Repair or rebuild existing machines, equipment, and apparatus by utilizing machine tools and hand tools;<\/p>\n<p>Perform benchwork to fit and assemble precision parts to apparatus and equipment; use hand and machine tapping equipment, files, scrapers, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Perform welding, brazing, soldering, heat treating, and tempering of metals;<\/p>\n<p>Make jigs, fixtures, and devices; grind and sharpen milling cutters, special shop tools; repair and maintain shop tools and equipment;<\/p>\n<p>Develop new equipment and parts to revise, improve and correct equipment and apparatus;<\/p>\n<p>Lay out and plan work sequence; make calculations and determine procedures for fabrication and forming processes;<\/p>\n<p>May perform work in other trades;<\/p>\n<p>Lead and instruct helpers as required;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a machinist OR full journey status as a machinist in a union; OR four years applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
