CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mariners perform all unlicensed deck duties aboard a ship.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform unlicensed deck duties aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 200 gross tons.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under direct supervision, perform semi-skilled and unskilled deck duties.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stand watches as lookout; may stand wheel watch except in restricted or inland waters;<\/p>\n

Paint, chip and clean weather deck structure, interior spaces and hull;<\/p>\n

Assist in preservation and repair of common deck or rigging equipment;<\/p>\n

Conduct daily sanitary cleaning of assigned living spaces;<\/p>\n

Handle lines when berthing or leaving a berth;<\/p>\n

Repair and splice lines;<\/p>\n

Polish equipment fixtures;<\/p>\n

Lash deck cargo and gear under supervision of Mariner II or Mate;<\/p>\n

Stand security watch;<\/p>\n

Perform clean up work;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Legal Requirement<\/p>\n

Entry rating U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s document endorsed &quotOrdinary Seaman&quot<\/p>\n

OR<\/p>\n

a temporary permit to sail as ordinary seaman.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
