{"id":5092,"date":"2024-03-24T18:11:52","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T01:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=5092"},"modified":"2025-05-22T11:59:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T18:59:15","slug":"mate-second","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/classified-staff\/mate-second\/","title":{"rendered":"Mate, Second"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18975 (NE S IBU)<br \/>\n23252 (NE H NI IBU)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serve as second officer aboard ship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Serve as second officer and third in command of an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stand bridge watches operating and navigating the ship;<\/p>\n<p>Plan and teach courses in seamanship and other marine specialties;<\/p>\n<p>Order and maintain ship&#8217;s charts, publications and navigation supplies;<\/p>\n<p>Prepare track of scientific cruises;<\/p>\n<p>Serve as officer in charge of gyrocompass; maintain log and perform routine maintenance;<\/p>\n<p>Responsible for readiness of electronic equipment; perform operating tests;<\/p>\n<p>Serve as officer in charge of after-deck entering or leaving port or anchorage;<\/p>\n<p>Stand security watch when required.<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legal Requirement<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. Coast Guard Second Mate&#8217;s license valid for operation of an inspected motor vessel of unlimited tonnage, upon ocean waters.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>01\/03\/1973: New Class<br \/>\n06\/27\/1988: Revise Class<br \/>\n02\/15\/1991: Revise Class<br \/>\n06\/01\/2005: CSR Class Conversion<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP 18975 (NE S IBU) 23252 (NE H NI IBU) BASIC FUNCTION Serve as second officer aboard ship.
