CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mates are responsible for safe navigation of the ship and directing deck operations.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Serve as third mate aboard ship.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Serve as third officer and fourth in command of an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stand bridge watches operating and navigating the ship;<\/p>\n

Operate sophisticated navigational systems such as dynamic positioning system;<\/p>\n

Direct maintenance of life saving equipment;<\/p>\n

Requisition life saving equipment;<\/p>\n

In charge of bridge watch entering and leaving port;<\/p>\n

Stand security watches when required;<\/p>\n

Teach courses in seamanship and other marine specialities;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Legal Requirement<\/p>\n

A U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate’s license valid for operation of an inspected motor vessel of unlimited tonnage, upon ocean waters.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
