BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Provide advanced clinical expertise in ophthalmic care; provide leadership for specific clinic services and programs such as refractive and cosmetic surgery, and orthoptic procedures such as evaluating and measuring deviations of the ocular motor system and conducting visual alignment tests; act as clinical resource for staff; coordinate daily operations of the unit.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others. Under general direction, exercise advanced technical knowledge in a specific area of expertise such as refractive and cosmetic surgery, and orthoptic assessment and treatment, etc.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Regularly assign, instruct, and check the work of others; provide feedback on performance; develop staffing schedule and review leave requests;<\/p>\n

Provide work direction and guidance to staff; observe, review and provide feedback on staff performance;<\/p>\n

Serve as a role model for staff through demonstration of clinical expertise in a specialized service or program;<\/p>\n

Utilize clinical expertise to provide planned and spontaneous learning activities to patients, families and staff;<\/p>\n

Initiate clinic maintenance activities such as evaluating supply inventory, assessing equipment, and equipment maintenance procedures;<\/p>\n

Participate in evaluation and development of programs such as marketing strategies, expansion of clinic\/service hours, and clinic readiness for staff increases;<\/p>\n

Participate in staff interviews and provide information and observations to the employing official;<\/p>\n

Prepare and test the laser for refractive surgery to ensure appropriate functioning; prepare and set the laser for each patient’s procedure; perform circulating functions during refractive surgery such as setting up the surgical room, readying equipment, preparing the patient’s eye, and positioning the patient for surgery; evaluate the safety of the microkeratome for every refractive surgery case;<\/p>\n

Screen and consult with potential candidates for refractive laser surgery; promote the surgical and other services of the clinic; develop patient education materials;<\/p>\n

Conduct measurements and design individual treatment plans to correct and\/or cope with visual eye alignment problems;<\/p>\n

Perform treatment by establishing exercise training for vision therapy;<\/p>\n

Maintain detailed and accurate daily records of technical and statistical components of treatment;<\/p>\n

Initiate quality improvement activities such as maintaining the clinical outcomes database and initiating systems modifications to clinic operations;<\/p>\n

Maintain a clean environment; sterilize instruments; and maintain and monitor the functioning of equipment;<\/p>\n

Inventory, stock and order supplies;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required and work of Ophthalmic Technician 3 as needed.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Completion of an ophthalmic or orthoptic technician program AND four years of ophthalmic experience AND certification appropriate for the clinical specialty, Certified Ophthalmic Tech.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
