BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform skilled painting work on interior and exterior of buildings and facilities.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform journey-level duties in skilled painting work.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prepare surfaces for painting or finishing by scraping, sanding, washing, or otherwise removing dirt, grease, old finishes, and rust scale; remove paint from surfaces by using sanders, wire brushes, and paint and varnish removers;<\/p>\n

Preparatory to painting, make minor repairs in plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood and masonry surfaces by filling with putty, caulks, fiberglass, resin, etc.<\/p>\n

Apply primers, sealers, stains and under coats with brushes, rollers, or spray painting equipment, striping machine, etc.; paint machinery, piping, floors, and walls; apply hi-tech industrial enamels and epoxies;<\/p>\n

Prepare and finish or refinish woodwork and cabinets;<\/p>\n

Mix and blend colors for a wide variety of paints, epoxies, high performance industrial enamels, etc. for brush, roller, conventional or airless sprayers;<\/p>\n

Move furniture and place protective drop cloths; tape baseboards, glass, and other surfaces when needed;<\/p>\n

Clean brushes, rollers, spray and other painting equipment with water, solvent, thinner or other appropriate cleaners to keep equipment and tools in good working condition; observing safety requirements;<\/p>\n

Tape and flush smooth wall sheetrock joints using trowels, hawks, taping knives and other taping equipment; apply texture material to walls and ceilings using texture machines, pumps and hand tools; install vinyl and paper wall coverings;<\/p>\n

Install, work from and remove scaffolding, stages, planks, ladders, jacks, spider staging and other work platforms;<\/p>\n

Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies;<\/p>\n

Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs;<\/p>\n

Provide required assistance using respirators and protective clothing in support of the asbestos abatement program;<\/p>\n

May operate and perform minor maintenance on sandblasters, power washers, striping machines, airless and conventional paint sprayers, and spray booth; operate engraving machine, Leteron machine;<\/p>\n

May operate ladder and boom trucks and forklift;<\/p>\n

May refinish gym floors and other hardwood floors; sealing, stripping, and sanding;<\/p>\n

May direct helpers as required;<\/p>\n

May perform work in other trades;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter; OR full journey status as a painter in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. May require valid State of Washington driver’s license.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
