{"id":4891,"date":"2024-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4891"},"modified":"2026-06-27T19:01:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T02:01:23","slug":"painter","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/painter\/","title":{"rendered":"Painter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18855 (NE S WFSE Trades)<br \/>\n22847 (NE H NI WFSE Trades)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform skilled painting work on interior and exterior of buildings and facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform journey-level duties in skilled painting work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prepare surfaces for painting or finishing by scraping, sanding, washing, or otherwise removing dirt, grease, old finishes, and rust scale; remove paint from surfaces by using sanders, wire brushes, and paint and varnish removers;<\/p>\n<p>Preparatory to painting, make minor repairs in plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood and masonry surfaces by filling with putty, caulks, fiberglass, resin, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Apply primers, sealers, stains and under coats with brushes, rollers, or spray painting equipment, striping machine, etc.; paint machinery, piping, floors, and walls; apply hi-tech industrial enamels and epoxies;<\/p>\n<p>Prepare and finish or refinish woodwork and cabinets;<\/p>\n<p>Mix and blend colors for a wide variety of paints, epoxies, high performance industrial enamels, etc. for brush, roller, conventional or airless sprayers;<\/p>\n<p>Move furniture and place protective drop cloths; tape baseboards, glass, and other surfaces when needed;<\/p>\n<p>Clean brushes, rollers, spray and other painting equipment with water, solvent, thinner or other appropriate cleaners to keep equipment and tools in good working condition; observing safety requirements;<\/p>\n<p>Tape and flush smooth wall sheetrock joints using trowels, hawks, taping knives and other taping equipment; apply texture material to walls and ceilings using texture machines, pumps and hand tools; install vinyl and paper wall coverings;<\/p>\n<p>Install, work from and remove scaffolding, stages, planks, ladders, jacks, spider staging and other work platforms;<\/p>\n<p>Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies;<\/p>\n<p>Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs;<\/p>\n<p>Provide required assistance using respirators and protective clothing in support of the asbestos abatement program;<\/p>\n<p>May operate and perform minor maintenance on sandblasters, power washers, striping machines, airless and conventional paint sprayers, and spray booth; operate engraving machine, Leteron machine;<\/p>\n<p>May operate ladder and boom trucks and forklift;<\/p>\n<p>May refinish gym floors and other hardwood floors; sealing, stripping, and sanding;<\/p>\n<p>May direct helpers as required;<\/p>\n<p>May perform work in other trades;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter; OR full journey status as a painter in a union; OR four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
