{"id":4825,"date":"2024-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4825"},"modified":"2026-06-27T19:01:03","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T02:01:03","slug":"phlebotomist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/phlebotomist\/","title":{"rendered":"Phlebotomist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18394 (NE S SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<br \/>\n22589 (NE H NI SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain laboratory specimens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Collect blood specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under general supervision, following established standards and practices, collect blood from patients; instruct patients in the procedure for the collection of specimens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection; verify patient identification;<\/p>\n<p>Instruct patients in the procedure for collecting urine and stool specimens;<\/p>\n<p>Assist with inventory and ordering of supplies;<\/p>\n<p>Perform simple laboratory procedures such as bleeding time, whole blood prothrombin time, whole blood glucose determinations and setting up bacterial cultures; calibrate and perform preventive maintenance to laboratory instruments;<\/p>\n<p>Maintain required records, reports and statistics;<\/p>\n<p>Assist in the orientation and training of students and new employees;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High school graduation AND completion of a phlebotomy course.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LEGAL REQUIREMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Current Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy Certification (MA-P) with the Washington State Department of Health, OR obtain the MA-P within 60 days of start date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>02\/07\/1992: New Class<br \/>\n06\/01\/2005: CSR Class Conversion<br \/>\n04\/01\/2022: Revise Legal Requirement<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP 18394 (NE S SEIU 925 HCP\/LT) 22589 (NE H NI SEIU 925 HCP\/LT) CLASS SERIES CONCEPT Perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain laboratory specimens.
