CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain laboratory specimens.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Collect blood specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under general supervision, following established standards and practices, collect blood from patients; instruct patients in the procedure for the collection of specimens.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection; verify patient identification;<\/p>\n

Instruct patients in the procedure for collecting urine and stool specimens;<\/p>\n

Assist with inventory and ordering of supplies;<\/p>\n

Perform simple laboratory procedures such as bleeding time, whole blood prothrombin time, whole blood glucose determinations and setting up bacterial cultures; calibrate and perform preventive maintenance to laboratory instruments;<\/p>\n

Maintain required records, reports and statistics;<\/p>\n

Assist in the orientation and training of students and new employees;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

High school graduation AND completion of a phlebotomy course.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n

LEGAL REQUIREMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Current Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy Certification (MA-P) with the Washington State Department of Health, OR obtain the MA-P within 60 days of start date.<\/p>\n
