Prepare, modify and\/or develop instructional programs, teaching aids, materials and equipment associated with classroom and laboratory instruction in undergraduate and graduate level courses. Work may be performed in a variety of disciplines using chemical, microscopic, cytologic, physical (electrical\/mechanical) or biologic and bacteriologic procedures and analyses. This series is distinguished from others by its primary emphasis on science instructional support activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a basic or applied science teaching program, provide professional\/technical support requiring knowledge of a scientific discipline, electronics and\/or engineering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under general supervision, provide instructional support to science-related undergraduate courses requiring limited design\/development work such as modifying\/adapting existing experiments\/demonstrations, implementing new experiments or demonstrations using standard techniques\/procedures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plan laboratory assignments and schedules; assist in the development of demonstration models; prepare and conduct laboratory or lecture demonstrations;<\/p>\n<p>Determine need for materials, equipment and instruments necessary for assigned course load; order or procure necessary items within budgetary limitations;<\/p>\n<p>Construct apparatus used in demonstrations; prepare and set up equipment and materials for laboratory experiments using safety procedures in handling hazardous materials such as acids, pesticides, radiation, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Search literature to determine methods to improve laboratory techniques and the teaching of scientific principles to students;<\/p>\n<p>Assist\/advise students in laboratory assignments or in discipline subject matter; write, edit or modify laboratory handouts or manuals; modify experiments; advise instructors of potential problems with existing programs;<\/p>\n<p>Operate, and perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instruct students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment;<\/p>\n<p>Order and dispense supplies, equipment and materials; maintain records;<\/p>\n<p>Monitor laboratories to ensure compliance with safety policy; assist in the development of safe laboratory procedures;<\/p>\n<p>May provide direction to others;<\/p>\n<p>May assist in grant proposal preparation; may administer course or grant budgets; i.e., monitoring expenditures, preparing reports, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Bachelor&#8217;s Degree with major study in a basic or applied science<\/p>\n<p>OR<br \/>\nan equivalent combination of training, formal education and\/or research, training or service laboratory operations experience.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>11\/13\/1975: New Class<br \/>\n06\/17\/1983: Revise Title &amp; Class<br \/>\n03\/03\/1989: Revise Class<br \/>\n11\/16\/2002: New to SEIU<br \/>\n06\/01\/2005: CSR Class Conversion<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP 17784 (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv) 22437 (NE H NI SEIU 925 Non Supv) CLASS SERIES CONCEPT Provide instructional support services to scientific instructional programs.
