{"id":4491,"date":"2024-02-04T22:55:37","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T06:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4491"},"modified":"2025-05-23T10:26:26","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T17:26:26","slug":"sheet-metal-mechanic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/classified-staff\/sheet-metal-mechanic\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheet Metal Mechanic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18866 (NE S WFSE Trades)<br \/>\n22858 (NE H NI WFSE Trades)<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEFINITION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform journey-level work in forming, fabrication, and installation of sheet metal components.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Positions in this class perform a variety of journey-level duties in skilled sheet metal repair and fabrication work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lay out, fabricate, and install standard and custom-made gutters, downspouts, vent covers, hatch covers, grills, louvers, ducts, and flashing;<\/p>\n<p>Lay out, fabricate, install, maintain, or repair stove pipes, grates, guards, chimney caps, machine guards, sinks, incinerators, screens, metal hoppers, shields, roofing and sheet metal parts and components;<\/p>\n<p>Repair metal windows and doors; form and weld, solder, braze, or silver solder a variety of metal objects, fixtures, equipment, and structures;<\/p>\n<p>Operate hand and power brakes, forming rods, squaring shears, elbow machines, folding machines, emery wheels, power punches, and other power and hand tools;<\/p>\n<p>Estimate quantity of material and hours of labor required to perform various jobs;<\/p>\n<p>Service, install, and repair oil burners, fire boxes, ventilation and heating ducts;<\/p>\n<p>Inspect ventilation and exhaust systems for fire hazard, hazardous fumes, and general effectiveness of operation;<\/p>\n<p>Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs;<\/p>\n<p>Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies;<\/p>\n<p>May lead and instruct helpers as required;<\/p>\n<p>May perform work in other trades;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sheet metal mechanic; OR full journey status as a sheet metal mechanic in a union; OR four years&#8217; applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
