{"id":4462,"date":"2024-01-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4462"},"modified":"2026-06-27T18:59:46","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T01:59:46","slug":"specimen-processing-technician","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/specimen-processing-technician\/","title":{"rendered":"Specimen Processing Technician"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>18055 (NE S SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<br \/>\n22479 (NE H NI SEIU 925 HCP\/LT)<\/p>\n<p>18686 (NE S WFSE HMC)<br \/>\n22755 (NE H NI WFSE HMC)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under direct supervision, perform semi-technical duties in the Specimen Processing Services Area of a Clinical Medical Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Positions in this class are distinguished by assignment of duties of a semi-technical nature involving the processing of specimens and information in a Clinical Medical Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, identifying, assigning accession numbers, sorting, preparation and internal laboratory distributing of blood, urine, and other biological specimens;<\/p>\n<p>Perform data processing distribution of laboratory reports to various patient units throughout the hospital; perform clerical duties such as filing, recording, and charting patient results; prepare and\/or send data for computer processing; perform filing related to storage of computed data;<\/p>\n<p>Perform semi-technical procedures such as collecting and measuring samples, recording data, weighing specimens, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Operate laboratory equipment such as autoclave, centrifuge, copy equipment, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Operate laboratory computer terminals to enter or retrieve lab data;<\/p>\n<p>Order minor supplies from established sources and assist in inventories of supplies and equipment;<\/p>\n<p>Required to perform and become proficient in human venipuncture techniques;<\/p>\n<p>Responsible for logging, preparation, sending, receiving, and phone activity for the blood bank within the hospital;<\/p>\n<p>Answer telephone calls concerning patient values, normal values, specimen requirements, procedures, cost of test, time required for tests, and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis;<\/p>\n<p>Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two years of college-level science in an applicable field<\/p>\n<p>OR<br \/>\nHigh School graduation or GED Certification AND one year of clinical laboratory experience in a Clinical or Public Health Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>10\/12\/1973: New Class<br \/>\n12\/14\/1973: Revise Title<br \/>\n12\/18\/1974: Revise Class<br \/>\n05\/14\/2004: Revise Class\/Title<br \/>\n06\/01\/2005: CSR Class Conversion<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP 18055 (NE S SEIU 925 HCP\/LT) 22479 (NE H NI SEIU 925 HCP\/LT) 18686 (NE S WFSE HMC) 22755 (NE H NI WFSE HMC) BASIC FUNCTION Under direct supervision, perform semi-technical duties in the Specimen Processing Services Area of a Clinical Medical Laboratory.
