Positions in this job assess patient status, evaluate, plan, and administer speech and language services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This class acts as a lead clinician within the hospital acute, inpatient rehab or outpatient setting, in collaboration with manager or supervisor; provides professional speech and language services to individuals with typical and complex disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Regularly assigns, instructs, and checks work of at least 1 FTE of employees in the Speech-Language Pathologist 1 and\/or 2 job classes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Speech-Language Pathologist 3 is distinguished from the Speech-Language Pathologist 2 in that the former serves as a lead clinician which includes regularly assigning and checking the work of at least 1 FTE of employees in the Speech-Language Pathologist 1 and\/or 2 job classes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Independently manage complex patient caseload which includes planning, evaluating and treating patients;<\/p>\n<p>Train, assign, provide direction, and check the work of other Speech-Language Pathologists; routinely meet with staff and provide formal objective feedback; assess competency of assigned clinical staff;<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with a manager, coordinate development of department projects and quality improvement activities to promote delivery of quality speech therapy care; delegate projects to others and assist staff in program development and quality improvement tasks;<\/p>\n<p>Provide clinical supervision to students in educational practicums in evaluation and treatment of speech, cognitive, language, and swallowing disabilities;<\/p>\n<p>Oversee workgroup clinical education programs; ensure training materials are up-to-date; provide training for new clinical instructors and mentorship for speech pathologists taking students; monitor the experience of all workgroup students to promote successful skill acquisition and professional development;<\/p>\n<p>Coordinate new staff orientation, develop and update workgroup competencies;<\/p>\n<p>Identify clinical or systems concerns; develop and oversee program development and quality improvement work within the workgroup, set agendas for clinical meetings and lead meetings;<\/p>\n<p>Conduct in-service training for lay and professional staff concerning swallowing, cognitive, speech and language disabilities;<\/p>\n<p>Represent the Speech-Language Pathology area in hospital committees;<\/p>\n<p>May assume responsibility for a specialty program as assigned by leadership;<\/p>\n<p>Perform the duties of the Speech-Language Pathologist 2; and<\/p>\n<p>Perform other duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Licensed by the State of Washington as a Speech Language Pathologist,<\/p>\n<p>AND<\/p>\n<p>Master\u2019s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communicative Disorders or equivalent degree approved by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,<\/p>\n<p>AND<\/p>\n<p>A Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech\/Language and Hearing Association,<\/p>\n<p>AND<\/p>\n<p>Five years of experience as a speech-language pathologist.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>11\/16\/2021: Class adopted for UW contract classified staff per PERC decision to add this title to the SEIU 1199NW HMC Social Worker (SW)\/Dietitian bargaining unit (Case #133382).
