CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apply scientific knowledge gained through formal education at least at the Bachelor’s level or equivalent\/related experience to conduct research in a scientific discipline such as biology, psychology, the biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, oceanography, social work, etc. Responsibility for, assisting or contributing in one or more of the following tasks: Identifying and defining research problems; Designing approaches or hypotheses to be tested and the methodology to be used; Designing specific phases of research projects; Analyzing results; Developing conclusions and hypotheses; Presenting research results in publishable form; Developing and obtaining research grants.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is an intermediate level, developing\/maturing professional researcher. Independently evaluates, selects and applies standardized scientific or engineering procedures and techniques; assignments have clear and specified objectives, and require the investigation of a limited number of variables. Incumbent relies on limited experience and exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices in making minor adaptations and modifications.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assigned work under general guidance; receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems, and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment. Knows and effectively uses the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization; continues development of technical expertise and knowledge through experience and application.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Performs work that involves conventional types of plans, investigations, systems, structures, or equipment with relatively few complex features or for which there are precedents.<\/p>\n

Performs tasks\/projects of a larger scope; may lead specific tasks within the project scope; scopes tasks and develops approaches for moderately difficult tasks; takes responsibility for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness for small projects.<\/p>\n

Assists in preparation of reports, papers, presentations, new proposals, etc. , and may collaborate on some; presents papers at technical meetings.<\/p>\n

Continues to enhance capabilities for project planning, including assessment of cost, scope and schedule against plan; implements new systems\/approaches for moderately difficult tasks\/projects.<\/p>\n

Has established networks in internal peer group; starts becoming part of identifiable external peer network.<\/p>\n

Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals; provides ideas to improve efficiency at group level.<\/p>\n

Participates in procurement of additional\/new funding through contributions to technical proposal preparation and\/or presentations.<\/p>\n

Contributes to positive co-worker\/customer\/investigator relationships through efficient interaction on current grants\/projects.<\/p>\n

Monitors the work of junior staff to ensure that correct procedures are followed; provides direction to assure completion of technical tasks and projects.<\/p>\n

May guide the work of junior staff or students as necessary to achieve specific assignments.<\/p>\n

Perform other duties as assigned.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n

CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Research: Individuals having formal academic preparation at least at the Bachelor\u2019s level or demonstrated professional competence in a specific field of research, and having responsibility for or assisting in one or more of the following tasks: identifying and defining research problems; designing approaches or hypotheses to be tested and the methodology to be used; designing specific phases of research projects; analyzing results; developing conclusions and hypotheses; presenting research results in publishable form; and\/or obtaining research grants.<\/p>\n
