{"id":4055,"date":"2023-11-15T16:12:45","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T00:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4055"},"modified":"2025-08-15T08:49:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T15:49:44","slug":"research-scientist-engineer-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/represented-civil-service-exempt-staff\/uaw-rse\/research-scientist-engineer-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Scientist\/Engineer 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>23545 (NE S UAW Research)<br \/>\n23544 (E S UAW Research)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apply scientific knowledge gained through formal education at least at the Bachelor&#8217;s level or equivalent\/related experience to conduct research in a scientific discipline such as biology, psychology, the biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, oceanography, social work, etc. Responsibility for, assisting or contributing in one or more of the following tasks: Identifying and defining research problems; Designing approaches or hypotheses to be tested and the methodology to be used; Designing specific phases of research projects; Analyzing results; Developing conclusions and hypotheses; Presenting research results in publishable form; Developing and obtaining research grants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an entry level professional researcher. Perform routine scientific or engineering work, evaluating, selecting, and applying standardized scientific or engineering procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives; assignments require investigation of a limited number of variables and few complex features. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of alternatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Works under limited supervision to complete assigned tasks\/projects, demonstrating the ability to work independently. Supervisor screens assignments for unusual or difficult problems and selects techniques and procedures to be applied on non-routine work. Receives close supervision on new aspects of assignments. Knows the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization; continues development of technical expertise and knowledge through experience and application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using accepted methods and techniques, solves well-defined problems and performs specific and limited portions of broader projects, under technical guidance of an experienced scientist\/engineer.<\/p>\n<p>Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.<\/p>\n<p>Defines and improves practices from experiences on small projects.<\/p>\n<p>Conducts experiments\/tests in the laboratory\/field that include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling, and processing data.<\/p>\n<p>Contributes data\/findings for use in reports, documents, or oral\/written presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals; may provide ideas to improve efficiency at group level; networks primarily within own technical peer group.<\/p>\n<p>In the process of learning methods for planning, including assessment of cost, scope, and schedule against plan; implements established systems\/approaches for moderately difficult tasks.<\/p>\n<p>No defined role in identifying\/securing research funding, however, successful performance of project related tasks provides support to on-going funding efforts.<\/p>\n<p>May guide the work of junior staff or students as necessary to achieve specific assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Perform other duties as assigned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bachelor&#8217;s degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Research: Individuals having formal academic preparation at least at the Bachelor\u2019s level or demonstrated professional competence in a specific field of research, and having responsibility for or assisting in one or more of the following tasks: identifying and defining research problems; designing approaches or hypotheses to be tested and the methodology to be used; designing specific phases of research projects; analyzing results; developing conclusions and hypotheses; presenting research results in publishable form;
