{"id":4053,"date":"2023-11-15T16:09:05","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T00:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=4053"},"modified":"2026-03-27T08:33:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T15:33:59","slug":"reporter-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/represented-civil-service-exempt-staff\/sag-aftra\/reporter-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Reporter 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>19922 (NE S SAG-AFTRA)<br \/>\n25574 (NE H SAG-AFTRA)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Collect information and report stories to the public via audio, print, or video for all KUOW platforms, including broadcast, web, social media, and podcasts.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second level in a three-level series; the next level is Reporter 2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pitch and report complex stories for KUOW programming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Work under general direction to report, pitch, and bring strategic insight to enterprise stories. Work independently to develop media stories pursuant to a beat. Shape the direction of a story and demonstrate consistent progression in editorial judgment and editing skills. Cultivate and maintain exclusive sources.\u00a0 Identify and craft news stories and guide coverage for a broad variety of assignments. Break stories.<\/p>\n<p>This class is distinguished from the Reporter 1 by the minimal editing required and an expansive portfolio that reflects deep sourcing across a broad range of coverage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Provide vision of coverage for beat(s) and\/or area of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Formulate a strategy to shape the editorial direction of a story.<\/p>\n<p>Actively develop, cultivate, and maintain a network of sources.<\/p>\n<p>Independently develop ideas and proposals for reports and programs.<\/p>\n<p>Deliver substantive reports quickly, providing rapid turnaround on varied subjects on a deadline with minimal support.<\/p>\n<p>Deliver expert-level reports for newscasts and shows, providing in-depth, accurate information and meaningful insights.<\/p>\n<p>Meet filing deadlines and productivity expectations of a Reporter 2 as determined by senior staff.<\/p>\n<p>Serve as lead on special projects such as a documentary or series.<\/p>\n<p>Edit two track audio and interview clips.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivate, curate and maintain sources to ensure consistent recorded interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Mix multi-track audio with more than two tracks, including sound, levels and integrating interview clips.<\/p>\n<p>Conduct interviews and develop natural conversations with minimal editing.<\/p>\n<p>May plan, coordinate, develop, write and\/or host in a multi-episode series.<\/p>\n<p>Perform duties of Reporter 1.<\/p>\n<p>Perform other duties as assigned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bachelor\u2019s degree and five years of professional journalism experience.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Public Information: Managerial or professional level positions having substantial responsibility for planning and directing the development and communication of information designed to keep the public informed of the institution\u2019s programs, accomplishments, and point of view. Individuals exercise discretion in determining content of written copy.
