{"id":3999,"date":"2023-11-13T14:55:16","date_gmt":"2023-11-13T22:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/?page_id=3999"},"modified":"2026-01-07T11:22:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T19:22:03","slug":"libraries-computing-specialist-9","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/represented-civil-service-exempt-staff\/seiu-local-925-libraries\/libraries-computing-specialist-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Libraries Computing Specialist 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>UW CODE AND REPRESENTATIVE GROUP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>23498 (E S 9 SEIU 925 Libraries Non Supv)<br \/>\n23497 (NE S 9 SEIU 925 Libraries Non Supv)<\/p>\n<p>23500 (E S 9 SEIU 925 Libraries Supv)<br \/>\n23499 (NE S 9 SEIU 925 Libraries Supv)<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Within the UW Libraries, support information technology operations in one or more areas such as but not limited to, web services and applications, release engineering, computing infrastructure, database development or administration, network administration, front and back-end application development or administration, software engineering, data center infrastructure, and large-scale desktop management.<\/p>\n<p>Positions performing the work of this job profile that supervise at least 1.0 FTE regular, non-temporary PLE positions must be placed in the appropriate supervisory bargaining unit job code.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Provide technical expertise and lead other Libraries staff in one or more areas of computing and networking technology, requiring a broad knowledge of hardware, software, networking, user, web and cloud technologies, along with an ability to communicate on technical subjects effectively with technical and non-technical libraries staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under administrative direction (typically reporting to a librarian), lead highly complex computing support for the Libraries or Press, including but not limited to the planning, design, and ownership of systems and services in one or more of the following areas:<\/p>\n<p>IT platforms both cloud and on-premises;<br \/>\nUI\/UX, web applications and services both on-premises and hosted large scale desktop management and deployment.<br \/>\nSupervision exercised typically includes all types of supervision exercised at grade 8, plus supervision of supervisory contract classified staff or Professional Libraries Employees in a lower grade. A larger number of direct and indirect reports is more common at this grade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mentor and\/or train Libraries Computing Specialist 8s;<\/p>\n<p>May serve as a department head. Lead the work of other Libraries Computing Specialists. May perform the work of a Libraries Computing Specialist 8;<\/p>\n<p>Plan and design optimizations and roadmap for one or more computer and network system related activities such as troubleshooting, programming, systems analysis, database development, complex report development, system security management, application development, system infrastructure design, or data center management, to meet the systems and analysis needs of the libraries;<\/p>\n<p>Lead and approve detailed requirements analysis and recommendations for computing environment, software applications, and system infrastructure, which includes cloud service engineering and hardware acquisition software and hardware acquisitions, and\/or upgrades;<\/p>\n<p>Lead and approve detailed requirements analysis and recommendations for digital projects, open scholarship, and preservation, including storage and backup planning;<\/p>\n<p>Lead and plan the design, integration, and deployment of web applications, web services, and database configurations to meet libraries technology needs;<\/p>\n<p>Lead and plan the design and integration of UX research; lead collaborations with other units on holistic user experience projects;<\/p>\n<p>Lead the planning and automation of large-scale desktop deployment (e.g., Microsoft Desktop Toolkit (MDT) and desktop management;<\/p>\n<p>Organize and integrate user management across systems and services;<\/p>\n<p>Plan and architect technical evaluation, installation, maintenance, and support of computer systems software, hardware, and cloud infrastructure;<\/p>\n<p>Oversee, develop, troubleshoot and maintain several disciplinary-specific computing systems such as Integrated Library Systems (ILS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), TItle Management Systems (e.g., AllBooks), Inventory systems (e.g., Caiasoft), Special Collections, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Provide recommendations regarding system upgrades, integration, and maintenance initiatives;<\/p>\n<p>Lead collaborations with other library units on space planning;<\/p>\n<p>Supervise Libraries IT help desk or IT user support services;<\/p>\n<p>Support the complex computing needs of onsite and remote customers of the libraries including but not limited to implement, support and maintain library training, meeting, and teaching spaces that serve both library staff and clientele;<\/p>\n<p>May perform the work of a Libraries Computing Specialist 8; and<\/p>\n<p>Perform other duties as assigned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bachelor\u2019s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics or related and 5 years of related experience.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIVIL SERVICE EXEMPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senior Computer Systems and Network Programming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New to SEIU 925 02-01-2022 per PERC Case No. 133181-E-20.<\/li>\n<li>Prior to 02-01-2023, no positions in the libraries IT functions were in grade 9, but the professional staff job codes and profiles that correspond to the grade 9 level are job code 11569, Senior Computer Specialist (E S 9), 19311 (NE S 9);
