This year\u2019s theme focuses on women educating and inspiring generations. Meant to highlight and support women, this year focuses on women who have dedicated their lives to \u201ceducation, mentorship, leadership to shape them minds and futures of all generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Teaching is a role that has been considered \u201cwomen\u2019s work\u201d, but it serves a powerful role in shaping the lens through which we see the world. A good teacher engages and inspires a student long after a student has left the classroom. Here at the UW, there are many stellar examples of women in that role like UW President Ana Mari Cauce.<\/a><\/p>\n The roots of Women\u2019s* History Month<\/a> as a national commemoration run all the way back to March 8, 1857, when women from various New York City factories staged a protest over poor working conditions. The first Women\u2019s Day celebration in the United States was in 1909, also in NYC. In 1911, March 8 was designated International Women\u2019s Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation<\/a> declaring Women\u2019s History Week to align with the longstanding International Women\u2019s Day. The next year, congress designated the second week of every March as National Women\u2019s History Week.<\/p>\n In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women\u2019s History Project<\/a>, congress authorized the president to designate each March as Women\u2019s History Month, a celebration of the contributions and achievements of women to the social, political, economic and cultural course of American history.<\/p>\n From Abigail Adams<\/a>\u2019 influencing to Sacagawea<\/a>\u2019s guiding to Sojourner Truth<\/a>\u2019s orating to Harriet Tubman<\/a>\u2019s emancipating to Clara Barton<\/a>\u2019s caring to Elizabeth Cady Stanton<\/a>\u2019s and Susan B. Anthony<\/a>\u2019s organizing to Amelia Earhart<\/a>\u2019s daring to Margaret Sanger<\/a>\u2019s innovating to Eleanor Roosevelt<\/a>\u2019s activating to Jeannette Rankin<\/a>\u2019s glass-ceiling-shattering to Georgia O\u2019Keeffe<\/a>\u2019s creating to Sister Rosetta Tharpe\u2019<\/a>s inventing to Grace Hopper<\/a>\u2019s computing to Dolores Huerta<\/a>\u2019s protecting to Rachel Carson<\/a>\u2019s eye-opening to Rosa Parks<\/a>\u2019 resisting to Lucille Ball<\/a>\u2019s entertaining to Maya Angelou<\/a>\u2019s writing to Gloria Steinem<\/a>\u2019s advocating to Shirley Chisolm<\/a>\u2019s trailblazing to Katherine Graham<\/a>\u2019s commanding to Barbara Walters<\/a>\u2019 reporting to Vera Wang<\/a>\u2019s couture-designing to Oprah Winfrey<\/a>\u2019s culture-defining to Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/a>\u2019s judging\u2014and many, many more.<\/p>\n The course of American history has been written and revised by courageous, visionary, persistent women.<\/p>\n But while applauding the achievements and progress animated by both famous and everyday champions of equity, Women\u2019s History Month also reminds us that gender bias<\/a> still exists,\u00a0women remain underrepresented<\/a>\u00a0in nearly all arenas of power and influence, and women\u2019s rights are human rights that need to be constantly fought for at home and around the world.<\/p>\n Moreover, women\u2019s empowerment in achieving health equity<\/a> for themselves, while a fundamental right and an\u00a0ongoing movement<\/a>, still lags behind men.<\/p>\n Learn<\/strong><\/p>\n There are many resources available to help raise awareness about the work of achieving gender parity and inclusiveness; here are just a few to check out:<\/p>\n Engage<\/strong><\/p>\n Women Supporting Women: A Pop-Up Event<\/a><\/strong> 2025 Town Hall Gala<\/strong><\/a> $ International Women\u2019s Day Speed Mentoring<\/strong><\/a> Women in Tech Seattle 2025<\/a><\/strong> Northwest Women\u2019s Show<\/strong><\/a> $ Film screening and panel discussion: Catching sight of Thelma and Louise<\/strong><\/a> $ Support<\/strong><\/p>\n If Women\u2019s History Month and International Women\u2019s Day inspire you to support positive change for women and girls, you can make a one-time donation <\/strong><\/a>or set up payroll deduction<\/strong><\/a> to a UW Combined Fund Drive<\/a> organization working toward a gender-equal world.
