Criminal conviction history background checks now required for all staff hires and rehires

In an effort to enhance the safety of our community, the University is now requiring a criminal conviction history background check on all final candidates to staff positions. The vast majority of staff positions were already flagged as security/safety sensitive, thus requiring the background check before hire. This change brings approximately eight percent of staff positions not previously flagged under a consistent practice.

Effective April 27, all staff positions are considered security/safety sensitive, will no longer require designation in UWHIRES or Workday, and will require a criminal conviction history background check prior to hire. The security/safety sensitive designations in both Workday and UWHIRES will be deprecated and flagging will no longer be necessary to trigger a criminal conviction history background check on staff positions.

Criminal conviction history background checks are paid by the departments at an average of $43 per check. For more information about costs, please visit the UWHR background check costs and billing webpage. UWHR background check webpages have been updated to reflect this change.
