By periodically reviewing your beneficiary designations for your UW benefit plans, personal insurance plans, and other financial accounts, you can rest assured that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Change-a-beneficiary\"><\/span>Change a beneficiary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Generally, you can review and update your beneficiary designations by contacting the company or organization that provides your insurance or retirement plan. You can sometimes do this online. Otherwise, you\u2019ll have to complete, sign, and mail a paper form.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Life-insurance\"><\/span>Life insurance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Complete your beneficiary change directly with MetLife on their <a href=\"https:\/\/online.metlife.com\/edge\/web\/public\/benefits\/index?groupNumber=164995&amp;rememberCompany=false\">website<\/a>. If you have any questions regarding making a beneficiary change or if you prefer to complete a paper beneficiary change, please contact MetLife at 1-866-548-7139. You will need to identify yourself as a Washington PEBB subscriber when you call MetLife. This will ensure that you are transferred to the PEBB specialists at MetLife.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"UW-retirement-plans\"><\/span>UW retirement plans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>For the UW Retirement Plan (UWRP) and the Voluntary Investment Program (VIP), change your beneficiary information online by logging into your account at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tiaa.org\/washington\">TIAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"State-retirement-plans\"><\/span>State retirement plans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>For state Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) retirement plans, such as PERS, TRS, PSERS, LEOFF, and the Washington State Deferred Compensation Program (WSDCP), update your beneficiary designation by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Completing the Retirement &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drs.wa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/drsms100.pdf\">DRS Beneficiary Designation\u00a0(PDF)<\/a> form OR<\/li>\n<li>Login to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drs.wa.gov\/\">DRS webpage<\/a> and update your beneficiaries online<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Make sure to keep a copy of the form for your records.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health-savings-account\"><\/span>Health savings account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>For your health savings account (HSA), change your beneficiary information online by logging into your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthequity.com\/HE.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HealthEquity account<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-is-a-beneficiary\"><\/span>What is a beneficiary?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>A beneficiary is a person or legal entity that is entitled to receive the proceeds from an estate, trust, retirement account, life insurance policy, or transfer on death accounts. A beneficiary can be one or more individuals or organizations, such as a trust or charity. You can designate two types of beneficiaries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary beneficiaries are first in line to receive the designated asset upon your death<\/li>\n<li>Secondary (or contingent) beneficiaries receive the asset if there are no surviving primary beneficiaries upon your death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When-to-review-a-beneficiary\"><\/span>When to review a beneficiary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Review and consider updating your beneficiaries when you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience a major life event such as a birth, marriage, dissolution of marriage or domestic partnership, or death in the family<\/li>\n<li>Update your will or estate plan<\/li>\n<li>Rollover a 401(k) or Individual Retirement Account (IRA)<\/li>\n<li>Receive a beneficiary verification notice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep copies of your beneficiary designation forms.
