Welcome Day employee orientation
At Welcome Day new employees explore the University’s mission, vision, culture and organizational structure; learn about the ethics and responsibilities of being a public employee; and discover amenities and programs available exclusively for UW employees. In addition, Welcome Day introduces the UW Employee Benefits package, including retirement plan options, and provides an opportunity for new employees to receive guidance and ask questions about benefits selections.
Participating in this orientation for new employees at the Seattle campus provides a great opportunity to meet other staff members embarking on their UW journey. Union-represented employees also have the opportunity to talk with union representatives from SEIU 925 and WFSE.
- Welcome Day occurs every Monday with the exception of holidays, in which case it’s held on Tuesday of that same week.
- 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
NOTE: Academic Personnel, the medical centers, UW Bothell and UW Tacoma host their own orientations; employees may attend Welcome Day in its entirety or simply attend the benefits portion starting at 10:30. Registration is still required.
Other orientation activities
The orientation process for new employees at the University of Washington has many facets and includes both required and recommended activities. In addition to University-sponsored training and orientations, your manager and department likely have their own onboarding procedures and activities. This checklist (PDF) may help you ensure a complete and successful orientation experience.
New supervisors should also attend SLP Supervisor Orientation to gain a deeper understanding of their role in human resources administration at the UW.
Succeeding at your job may require you to learn new concepts and develop additional skills. POD’s quarterly courses include a number of foundational courses in key areas, including communications, fiscal procedures, human resources administration, supervision, leadership, and personal growth.
If you are a new supervisor, you may have the opportunity to participate in the Strategic Leadership Program at no cost to you or your department.
