ASSISTANT STEAM ENGINEER

Operate boiler room equipment and assist with the operation of generators, water chillers, air compressors, and allied equipment.
The Assistant Steam Engineer is distinguished from the Steam Engineer in that lead responsibilities are not required and licensing requirements are at a lower level. This class is normally preparatory for the full journey Steam Engineer status.
Assist in the operation of boilers, turbine generators, air compressors, and chilled water systems;
Diagnose operating difficulties and take or recommend corrective measures; report maintenance problems beyond ability to resolve;
Conduct routine shift maintenance and inspection of power plant equipment;
Maintain proper power plant housekeeping and safety programs;
Monitor daily power plant logs, take shift readings, and prepare assigned reports and requests for appropriate supplies and inventory;
May be required to load and unload coal, remove cinders, etc.;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
One year of applicable experience with power plant operations, including feed water systems, coal, gas, and fuel oil fired high-pressure boiler systems and all auxiliary equipment, water chilling systems, high voltage generation and distribution systems and related combustion controls and safety devices; OR a combination of experience and vocational training equivalent to one year of experience with power plant operations.
Possession of a valid and applicable steam engineer's license may be required.
A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
