BASIC FUNCTION
Lead Vascular Sonographers; assist in coordinating the operation of a vascular laboratory; perform diagnostic vascular examinations independent of physician of supervision in a laboratory, patient care unit, and surgical setting; and interpret and present diagnostic findings to referring healthcare providers.
DISTINGUISHINGCHARACTERISTICS:
Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Under general direction, perform administrative duties for coordination of a vascular laboratory such as reviewing lab records and patient charge documents for accuracy and completeness; maintaining productivity records; and coordinating clinical activities.
TYPICAL WORK:
Lead employees performing vascular sonography studies;
Instruct physicians, post-doctoral fellows, residents, and medical student and ultrasound student interns in the theory, techniques, applications, and analysis of vascular sonography procedures;
Coordinate clinical activities and services; coordinate appropriate staffing levels for the laboratory in the supervisor's absence;
Maintain laboratory records such as examinations performed and findings;
Participate in research projects;
Perform, evaluate and provide diagnostic interpretation of non-invasive and invasive ultrasound and physiological examinations on patients and research participants in the areas of extracranial cerebrovascular, intracranial cerebrovascular, peripheral venous, peripheral arterial, and abdominal vessels;
Under physician supervision, perform therapeutic procedures, such as pseudoaneurysm compression;
Prepare patient for examination; obtain the patient history through interview and review of the chart; explain testing procedures; perform physical examination;
Interpret and present preliminary examination findings to patients and discuss the severity of the findings and potential treatment options to prepare the patient for discussions with his/her physician; document all discussions with patients;
Interpret and present preliminary examination findings to referring physicians; provide additional information as requested; dictate final report;
Schedule and prioritize patient examinations;
Select and perform appropriate examinations as necessary based on the patient assessment and initial physician order, to provide accurate representation of patient's anatomy and pathophysiology as determined during the ongoing examination; analyze, interpret, record and report findings;
Ensure examination equipment is maintained and functioning appropriately before the onset of an examination; identify and report equipment malfunctions;
Complete hospital charge documents;
Instruct healthcare providers, physicians, residents, staff, and vendors on non-invasive vascular examinations;
Present patient examinations cases at regular medical care conferences for quality assurances purposes;
Conduct patient examinations during surgical procedures in the operating room;
Calculate accuracy of examinations performed by comparison to radiological or intraoperative findings and submit report to supervisor for review;
Evaluate and critique non-invasive vascular equipment for vendors;
Train Vascular Technologist Trainees or other Vascular Sonographer staff;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Completion of a training program accredited by the American Medical Association - Committee on Allied Health Education (AMA-CAHEA) for vascular ultrasound
AND
Possess current registration as a Registered Vascular Technologist through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
AND
Two years of experience performing vascular sonography studies
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
