DEFINITION
Perform journey-level work in welding and metal fabrication.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class perform a variety of journey level duties in skilled welding and metal fabrication work.
TYPICAL WORK
Weld and cut all types of metals ranging from heavy plate and structural steel to light sheet metals by the use of arc welding, acetylene, and gas welding, brazing, silver brazing, heliarc, soldering, acetylene burning, and electric arc burning;
Working from blueprints or drawings or verbal instructions, plan and fabricate various types of structures utilizing fastening by welding;
Weld jigs, parts for heavy equipment, ladders, railings and pipe including materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, and all types of ferrous and nonferrous metals;
Repair or construct structural frames, containers, machinery, and equipment;
Operate engine lathe, milling machines, shapers, chipping hammers, grinders, wire brushes, and other hand and power operated equipment;
May perform work in other trades;
May load, unload, and operate light vehicles;
May lead or instruct helpers as required;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a welder-fabricator, OR full journey status as a welder-fabricator in a union; OR two years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
Examination Requirements:
A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
