MAINTENANCE MECHANIC 1

8814 (WFSE Skilled Trades)

DEFINITION

Assist journeyworker and/or perform work of a semi-skilled nature in the maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance duties requiring a limited knowledge of various trade skills such as carpentry, electrical, painting, etc. Positions may work either independently in routine maintenance assignments, or under the technical direction of a journeyworker.

TYPICAL WORK

Assist in the maintenance, operation and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural systems of buildings, grounds, and utility distribution;

May assist journey tradesworkers by performing duties related to carpentry, painting, plastering, plumbing, steam-fitting, mechanical or electrical work, refrigeration maintenance, machinists trades, etc.;

Assist in the fabrication of equipment and materials constructed in trades shops in accordance with project requirements;

Operate power tools and equipment; operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies;

May attend technical training courses;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six month's full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Examination Requirements:

The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant's experience in mechanical maintenance work; ability to perform demanding physical labor; knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair techniques; ability to perform general mechanical maintenance and repair of buildings, machinery and equipment.
