CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Serve as a library and archives specialist and archivist for the Elisabeth C. Miller Library in the Center for Urban Horticulture, a unit of the University of Washington Botanic Gardens (“the Library”).

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform full range of complex library tasks such as archival and records management, development and cataloging of library collection; and bibliographic and reference searches specific to horticulture.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the expert level of the series. Under general direction, perform complex library tasks and problem solving involving intensive application of specialized knowledge and skills. Independent discretion and judgement is regularly exercised in performing library duties and providing services to patrons. Participate in the acquisition, development, and management of the botanic gardens library collections, perform original descriptive and subject cataloging and classification, complex bibliographic and reference searches specific to the area of horticulture.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform original descriptive and subject cataloging and classification in accordance with established cataloging rules for the Library;

Perform complex cataloging of horticulture library materials; completes and upgrades records which require classification, subject analysis, and extensive descriptive changes; correct and add subjects or classification;

Review dealers’ catalogs and proposed library acquisition plans; recommends and prioritizes acquisition of library materials in specialized area;

Perform bibliographic and reference searches in the area of specialization using knowledge of complex reference resources, including interpreting and conferring on reference research strategies with clients;

Prepare annual, operational, and other unit reports;

Evaluate gift material for possible addition to specialized collection;

Perform pre- or post-search of materials ordered or received in area of specialization; correspond with publishers and vendors; identify and resolve problems with suppliers; assist in records transfer, accessioning, and storage;

Act as liaison with collection users, community, and other libraries; informs clients of availability of materials added to the collection; may be the appointed expert in charge of the horticulture hotline;

May serve as a foreign language resource person;

May train and provide direction and lead lower level staff including newer library staff, clerical staff, temporary or resident clerical staff, volunteers, or interns;

Perform duties of Library and Archives Paraprofessional 1 and 2 ;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent and five years’ experience in the functional operations of a library including two years beyond the entry level in an area of specialization

Equivalent experience and education.
