DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the Vocational Director and Rehabilitation Counselor II, counsel and test patients, make arrangements for vocational placements, and follow up on placements.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are distinguished by emphasis on direct patient services (counselling, testing, and placement), and active participation with other members of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Staff to coordinate the vocational aspects of rehabilitation with the medical and social aspects.

TYPICAL WORK

Conduct interviews with patients, evaluate their vocational history and potential, and consult with physicians, social service workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other professional staff members relating to the patient's adjustment ability and latent skills;

Administer vocational and intelligence tests to determine the patient's aptitudes and interests;

Counsel patients regarding suitable vocational goals and assist in the selection of trial or training placements;

Recommend placement for formal or on-the-job training;

Conduct follow-up interviews and evaluate the suitability of vocational placements;

Counsel patients regarding difficulties encountered in training assignments and recommend additional training or replacements as necessary;

May participate in limited teaching and program research;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

Master's Degree in psychology or rehabilitation counselling; or B.A. Degree with two years of experience in professional placement and counselling work.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Examination Requirements

A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
