DEFINITION

Drive refuse trucks and collect campus refuse and garbage.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions allocated to this class have as the principal duty the collection of campus garbage and refuse. This involves driving and operating packer or dump trucks with a capacity of at least 16 cubic yards.

TYPICAL WORK

Drive refuse truck picking up garbage, refuse, scrap, etc., from campus buildings and facilities and transport to area transfer station, dump site or incinerator;

Perform minor service on equipment such as changing tires, oil and lubrication, filling hydraulic tanks, washing and cleaning truck;

Check waste hauled for dangerous or hazardous material; notify proper personnel for disposal;

Pick up, sweep or hose down around incinerator, transfer site or pickup areas;

Perform related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

Ability to read and write;

Possession of a valid State driver's license;

Physical ability to perform heavy outdoor work.

Examination Requirements:

The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant's ability to perform heavy outdoor work, ability to work safely and reliably including a safe driving record, demonstrated ability to drive a refuse truck, and ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of a Waste Collector.
