DEFINITION

Analyze and resolve delinquent patient accounts.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are distinguished by the responsibility for analysis and resolution of delinquent patient accounts, including the exercise of judgement regarding financial arrangements, charity allowances and referral to collection agencies.

TYPICAL WORK

Assure that delinquent accounts are identified and initiate collection procedures on a timely basis;

Analyze delinquent accounts with regard to billing and payment history and determine appropriate follow-up procedure based on departmental guidelines;

Contact guarantors by telephone, mailgram or letter in attempts to resolve accounts; assess quarantors' ability to pay and make appropriate financial arrangements;

Prepare accounts for transmittal to collection agencies when departmental collection efforts are determined to be inadequate; provide account reconciliation and other documentation to collection agencies to support legal action;

Assist in the determination and consideration of charity accounts;

File claims in cases of bankruptcy and to estates of deceased patients;

Respond to inquires from patients, third-party sponsors, other departments, and collection agencies regarding delinquent accounts;

Prepare statistical reports;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

High School diploma or GED certificate plus one year of experience in the collection of accounts receivable and/or account follow-up. Six months' additional qualifying experience may be substituted for required education.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
