DEFINITION
Perform work related to study or research in a scientific field such as general physics, chemistry, meteorology, mineralogy or seismology under general direction of higher classified personnel. Prepare reports, record information, prepare charts, graphs, read instruments, perform calculations as directed or in accord with established procedures. Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and saws. May lead and direct other classified laboratory personnel.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions allocated to this class are distinguished by the requirement for performing skilled advanced work under general supervision of an engineer or research scientist to support study in a field such as physics, geology, meteorology or oceanography; Incumbents must have the ability to work independently in accord with established procedures, written instructions and specifications, blueprints or verbal instructions.
TYPICAL WORK
May lead and operate instruments and equipment such as microscopes, radiation counters, centrifuges, electronic equipment, refraction equipment, spectroscopes, light and polarizing microscopes, electron microscopes, polishing equipment, x-ray equipment, electrocardiographs, spectrophotometers, amino acid analyzer, NMR, etc.;
Perform repairs and preventive maintenance to laboratory equipment and test equipment; may construct new equipment;
Read and record data from instruments or other sources such as weather maps, thermometers, barographs, seismographs, pressure gauges or vacuum gauges;
Operate photography equipment, develop pictures and films;
Mount specimens on glass slides or other devices for study;
Plot graphs, charts, sketch maps, work with computer printouts, prepare reports and correspondence in accord with established procedures;
Operate marine equipment and vehicles, automobiles and light trucks; provide logistic support for field experiments;
Work in the field to assist in construction of structures such as instrument towers, antenna masts; work in the laboratory to assist in construction of facilities such as wind tunnels, light gas guns, shock tubes, etc.;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or science; OR two years of college-level work in engineering or science plus two years of experience equivalent to Research Aide I, OR four years of experience equivalent to Research Aide I.
The announcement of position vacancy (recruiting bulletin) may specify course work or experience within a specific discipline if determined necessary by the personnel officer. Selective certification from the employment list will be permitted to meet unique requirements of specifically identified positions.
Examination Requirements:
The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant's training and/or experience in engineering or science; experience as a research aide; knowledge of research techniques; ability to perform work in support of study or research in a scientific field such as general physics, meteorology, mineralogy or seismology, ability to operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders and saws; and ability to follow specifications, blueprints and verbal and written instructions. The examination may be given and scored by an examining panel.
