DEFINITION

Under direction of a senior technician or technical supervisor, operate, maintain and repair particle accelerator and auxiliary equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class are distinguished by operation and maintenance of accelerator and related equipment under close technical direction.

TYPICAL WORK

As instructed, prepare the accelerator for operation by performing pre-operation checks including checks of vacuum systems, cooling systems, change and out-gas filaments, and general equipment readiness;

Under established procedures, operate control components; adjust current and voltage; adjust magnets; observe accelerator operating characteristics to determine and correct malfunctions; ascertain radiation level of the accelerator;

Maintain logs and records of operations, malfunctions, repairs, maintenance and replacement of parts;

Disassemble and clean ion sources as required; disassemble, clean and reassemble auxiliary equipment; assist with accelerator alignment;

Maintain inventory of spare parts and order as required; monitor routine checkup, maintenance, and repair of accelerator and equipment;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

High school graduation or equivalent and one year of experience/training in the operation of an accelerator or equivalent.

Examination Requirements:

A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
